Attractive Urban Neighbourhoods for the Elderly

Attractive Urban Neighbourhoods for the Elderly

Evaluation

Throughout the land people are talking about society getting older. Are our cities and towns ready for this? What are the needs for good quality of life for people of an advanced age? Hhich urban neighborhoods offer the right conditions? The study draws from the experience of projects in which city neighborhoods of different types were adopted to the needs of elderly people. In focus, are the former ExWoSt (Experimental Housing and Urban Development) pilot projects of the research programme "The Elderly and their Residential Neighborhoods" (1989-1995) — 21 individual projects in inner-city areas, housing estates and suburban regions. We studied how the projects developed and how they work in everyday-life. At the same time we introduced 21 new projects that are both ground-breaking and transformable.
